Jesuit Father George Kalib Aziz died May 12, 2017 at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos. He was 89 years old.

A member of the Society of Jesus for 72 years and an ordained priest for 59 years, Fr. Aziz was born in Brownsville, Texas, Aug. 2, 1927, the oldest child of George Aziz and Lilliam Essey Aziz. After graduation from St. Joseph’s Academy, Brownsville, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate in Los Gatos in 1944. He studied classics at Los Gatos and philosophy at Mount St. Michael’s, Spokane, where he earned his BA and MA in philosophy.

From 1951-53, Fr. Aziz taught English at Bellarmine College Prep, San Jose, and logic at Loyola University (now Loyola Marymount University), Los Angeles, 1953-54. Theological studies were made at Alma College, Los Gatos. He was ordained in Los Angeles June 20, 1957. He received his MST in theology from Santa Clara University in 1958.

Upon completion of studies, he returned to Loyola University, teaching metaphysics, 1959-63. He then served seven years as a teacher and spiritual director at Ryan Preparatory College, Fresno, training future priests of the Fresno and Monterey dioceses.

In 1971 Fr. Aziz began a 30-year ministry in parishes in the Santa Rosa diocese, with assignments in Eureka, St. Helena, Napa, Clearlake, Fortuna, and Sebastopol. He later served at San Buenaventura Mission in Ventura and as a hospital chaplain in Duarte before beginning his final assignment at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in 2010.

Fr. Aziz is survived by his sister, Margaret Pate, of Brownsville.
