Herbert J. Raterman
Father Raterman wrote a book based on his sex education course.
Jesuit Fr. Herbert J. Raterman died on October 9, 2013, at Colombiere Center in Clarkston, Mich. Father Raterman was born on July 6, 1924, in Cincinnati. He attended Elder and St. Xavier High Schools in Cincinnati. Father Rateman entered the Society of Jesus on September 1, 1942, at Milford, Ohio. He was ordained a priest on June 15, 1955, at West Baden College in southern Indiana and professed final vows on August 15, 1959. As a Jesuit, Fr. Raterman earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Loyola University Chicago. He also took summer counseling courses at Xavier University, the University of Detroit, and Loyola University Chicago (1958–65).
During regency, Fr. Raterman taught Latin and English at Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago (1949–52). After ordination, he taught religion and was a student counselor at Saint Ignatius (1957–59) and St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati (1959–69). Father Raterman taught sex education at St. Xavier High School (1965–69, 1970–72), Summit High School in Cincinnati (1969–70), for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati (1972–73), and at Xavier University (1973–84). In addition, Fr. Raterman did retreat and pastoral ministry at St. Xavier High School (1970–73), Xavier University (1973–90), and Faber House in Cincinnati (1990–2005).
Father Raterman wrote a book based on his sex education course, titled Charity and Sex and the Young Man. He was also the moderator of the radio program “Moments of Reparation” from 1979–2005. Father Raterman was an active member of the Colombiere Center Jesuit Community since moving there in 2005.
