McCarthy, Edward L.
Jesuit Brother Edward L. McCarthy died on June 5, 2016, at Mary Manning Walsh Home in New York City.
Br. McCarthy was born in New York City on Oct. 14, 1931. He was the son of Louis and Beatrice (McNally) McCarthy. He entered the Society of Jesus on Nov. 13, 1957, at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in Poughkeepsie, New York. From 1960-1965, he was an assistant cook to the house. He served at Brooklyn Prep from 1965 to 1972 as a buyer and assistant minister. Br. McCarthy pronounced final vows on Aug. 15, 1969, at Brooklyn Prep, in Brooklyn, New York.
From 1972-1975, Br. McCarthy was an assistant minister at Xavier High School. He became superintendent at Woodstock College from 1974-1975. Br. McCarthy worked as a maintenance worker at St. Patrick’s Cathedral from 1978 until his death. He lived at the St. Ignatius Loyola Community at East 83rd Street.
Br. McCarthy is survived by his sister, Shirley McKee.
