In Memoriam
Requiescat in Pace: Fr. Anton Renna, S.J.

Father Anton J. “Sam” Renna, S.J., a beloved teacher, mentor, and spiritual and life guide at Brophy College Preparatory School for 45 years, died Friday, August 9, in Regis Infirmary at Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in Los Gatos, California, after a lengthy illness. He was 79 years old.

Born in San Jose on March 11, 1934, Anton graduated from Bellarmine Prep. He entered the Novitiate at Los Gatos on August 14, 1952, received his MA from Gonzaga University, and was assigned as an English teacher at Brophy College Prep.

After ordination by Archbishop Joseph T. McGucken in San Francisco on June 4, 1965 and completion of studies, he returned to the desert, teaching English and humanities to generations of Brophy students. He involved himself with many activities relating to the school, including leading 28 summer trips to Europe, shepherding groups of Brophy boys around Salzburg and other cities. He retired to Sacred Heart Jesuit Center in 2009.

To say he was beloved by students, faculty, and parents alike, is an understatement. He left an impression on all who knew him. He loved to laugh, he loved to be social, but mostly he loved his students. It was they to whom he gave of himself so patiently. He married and baptized countless alumni and their children and concelebrated many student Masses.

Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. on August 16 at the Sacred Heart Jesuit Center Chapel, 300 College Avenue, Los Gatos.

Donations in memory of Fr. Renna may be made to the California Province of the Society of Jesus, P.O. Box 68, Los Gatos, CA 95031, or you may call (408) 884-1632 or make a donation online at https://www.jesuitscalifornia.org/sslpage.aspx?pid=912
