Kelly Fox joined the province as Provincial Assistant for Health Care in January. Learn more about this dedicated nurse, mom and zealous Zags fan! In future issues, we’ll meet the rest of the health care team.
1. What drew you to nursing—and what keeps you inspired in this work today?
I was drawn to nursing by a call to serve others. The JOY of caring moments.
2. Have you had any previous connection to Jesuits or Jesuit ministries?
Indeed! Twenty family members have been educated by Jesuits at Gonzaga University. In addition, my great uncle was a Jesuit who entered the novitiate in Los Gatos in 1926. Finally, prior to my new position, I was an assistant professor and director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at the University of San Francisco.
3. How would you describe your philosophy of care?
I believe in the power of caring with others versus for others.
4. What do you find most meaningful about caring for Jesuits?
I am inspired by their works and demonstration of their mission in action.

5. When you’re not working, how do you most like to recharge?
I enjoy exercise, watching any and all sports (especially the Zags!), cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
6. What’s a small, everyday practice that helps you stay grounded or centered?
Each morning, I start my day with a reflection of gratitude.
7. Who is your favorite fictional doctor, nurse or health care worker—and why?
I will change this question to my role model in nursing: Lillian Wald, the first public health nurse in New York City, who started the Henry Street Settlement. She is known as a pioneer, innovator and advocate. She set the example for public/population health today by emphasizing the value and importance of bringing care to the community.
8. What is one thing people might be surprised to learn about you?
I was a baseball coach for a decade; 10 of the boys that I coached went to the Little League World Series in 2015.
9. If you weren’t a nurse, what do you think you’d be doing instead?
I would like to own a winery or be a sports broadcaster.
10. Favorite vacation spot?
That’s easy! Bainbridge Island, Washington.
