May 20, 1521 Ignatius is wounded by a cannonball at the Battle of Pamplona.
1521-1522 During his long convalescence at Loyola, Ignatius undergoes a spiritual conversion.
March 25, 1522 Ignatius begins 11 months of living in a cave outside the town of Manresa. It was here where he started work on what would become the Spiritual Exercises.
May 30, 1534 Ignatius and six others—including Francis Xavier and Peter Faber—pronounce vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.
September 27, 1540 Pope Paul III approves the Society of Jesus, making it an official religious order in the Catholic Church.
July 31, 1556 St. Ignatius dies in Rome, after serving as the first Superior General of the Society. There are already more than 1,000 Jesuits.
